Debit Card at Checkout: Credit or Debit?

July 19, 2025

Ever been asked “Credit or debit?” at checkout—while using your debit card—and wondered what the right answer is?

Here’s what’s really happening when you choose one over the other.

Choosing “Debit”

If you choose debit, you’ll enter your PIN. The payment is processed right away through a debit network like STAR or NYCE. The money comes out of your account immediately, and in some cases, you can get cash back at the register.

Choosing “Credit”

If you choose credit, you sign for the purchase. The money still comes from your checking account, but it runs through a credit card network like Visa. It might take a day or two to post, but the total is the same.

So why choose credit?

  • It can offer stronger fraud protection in some cases.
  • It avoids entering your PIN on shared or public keypads.
  • It may be required by some merchants, especially online.

The Bottom Line

Both options work—but knowing the difference helps you choose what’s best in the moment. And remember: even if you select “credit,” it’s still spending from your checking account.
